2011 UNITED Featured Speakers
Patty Shinseki

Patty Shinseki presented “Military Children --Thriving During Good and Challenging Time.” at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19.  She is a board member of Joining Forces, a national initiative in support of service members and their families, and the Military Child Education Coalition. Mrs. Shinseki is the spouse of retired four-star general Eric Ken Shinseki, who is currently serving as the seventh United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs. View the presentation.

Ramsey Jay Jr.

Ramsey Jay Jr. presented at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 19. He is an executive at Ares Management, a global alternative investment management firm and is author of Weekly Life Lessons in Leadership. He motivates people to transform their dreams into reality. He was also delegate for the Turkish Cultural Foundation's tour of Istanbul. View the presentation.

Lautner

Opening the UNITED conference, Netherland architects Jan-Richard Kikkert and Tycho Saariste discussed the architecture of NMU alumnus John Lautner at 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 18. View the presentation.

UNITED stands for Uniting Neighbors in the Experience of Diversity and is Northern Michigan University's annual celebration of diversity, culture and community. It is held each September, and 2012 marks its seventh edition. There are seven UNITED tracks: art, dance/music, diversity, film, food, research/scholarship and service. 2011 UNITED - Celebrity Chef
Michelle BommaritoMichelle Bommarito has been on cable television's popular Food Network six times in culinary competitions, taking home a gold medal in 2006. She presented "Eating Well" at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20. View the presentation.


2011 UNITED - Tom 'TJ' Leyden

Tom LeydenTom "TJ" Leyden presented "Turning Away from Hate" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20. Leyden was a former neo-Nazi white supremacist activist and a recruiter for 15 years. After turning back on the white power movement, he started working with the Task Force Against Hate at the Simon Wiesenthal Center. View the presentation.
