NMU Crew Claims Heavy Metal Series Trophy

After a string of second place finishes in rough water in Saturday’s Copperhead Regatta in Houghton, NMU Crew came roaring back to win most of the races in Sunday’s inaugural Marquette General Iron Oars Regatta on Teal Lake and claim the new Heavy Metal Series traveling trophy.

NMU started the day by placing first and second in the Novice Women’s 8, followed by Western Michigan in third.

The Varsity Men’s 4s produced some of the closest racing of the day.  NMU’s A boat avenged Saturday’s win by Michigan Tech, scorching the water in a time of 11:31.  Second through 4th places were then separated by only 6 seconds, with Michigan Tech B posting a 12:04, NMU B a 12:06 and Michigan Tech A a 12:12 ahead of 5th place Western.

In Varsity Women’s 4s, NMU A made up for being swamped in the rough water at Houghton Saturday by winning Sunday’s competition, followed by Michigan Tech A and Western Michigan.

In the highlight Varsity 8s, NMU won both events with the women posting a 12:07 followed by Western Michigan and MTU.  Men’s Varsity 8s were led by NMU’s fastest time of the day at 10:29, followed by MTU’s 11:02 and Western’s 12:18.

The regatta was staged by the Upper Peninsula Community Rowing Club with the support of Marquette General and a number of other local sponsors.  It also featured the debut of the UPCRC Juniors 8, a group from several local area high schools who have been practicing all summer and posted a 14:15, faster than all the collegiate women’s novice boats and a full two minutes ahead of the community club 8, a boat made up of people old enough to be their parents.  The club also fielded Men’s and Women’s Masters 4s and included a small boats event for pairs and single sculls.

Total points for the two days gave NMU Crew an edge over Michigan Tech and third place Western Michigan, meaning that the Heavy Metal Series trophy stays in Marquette for its first year.  UPCRC President Gail Brayden observed that since the Heavy Metal trophy is a cup filled with iron ore pellets and a chunk of copper, it’s much easier not to have to ship it.

NMU Crew Finishes Season in Iowa

Iowa City, IA—NMU Crew chose to conclude their fall season by going up against the big guys at Sunday’s Head of the Iowa Regatta in Iowa City.  Some 450 boats were entered from 39 colleges and clubs, most of them Division I varsity programs, traveling from as far as Colorado and Cincinnati.

NMU’s Men’s team turned in the best performances, with the Men’s Lightweight 4 (Andrzej Brzoznowski, Kurt Bonser, Mike Luehmann and Aaron Bollwahn, coxed by Cassie Webb) posting a 14:55.89 on the 2.5 mile course, good for 4th place in a field of 16 and missing third place by only 12 seconds.  NMU’s Men’s Novice 4 (Matt Nordine, Jordan Schwarz, Chris Worlow and Brandon Wittman, coxed by Brian Kurcz) placed 15th in a field of 27.  The Men’s Open 4 took 21st of 26 and the Men’s Open 8 ranked 16th of 24 entries, still placing ahead of several Big Ten and Big Twelve schools.

NMU’s women’s team was also competitive, led by the Women’s Lightweight 4 with a 6th place.  The Women’s Open 4 ranked 26th of 34, the Novice Women’s 4 19th of 24 and the Open Women’s 8 25th of 30 entries.

NMU Men’s Captain, Andrzej Brzoznowski, explained, “We wanted to see how we measured up against some of the major competition in preparation for winter training.  Especially considering that we had to make a lot of substitutions due to injuries and other absences, we did well overall.”

After training indoors for the winter, NMU Crew will next see action in the Lubbers Cup competition next March in Grand Rapids.
