Fitness Class Levels


Novice- *
For participants who are new to classes in a group setting, or need help to start an exercise program. These classes focus on technique, terminology and intensity with emphasis on proper form.

Energy- **
Designed for any fitness level to add a quick energy boost during his/her day. These classes focus on technique, intensity and proper form.

Enhance- ***
For participants who enjoy physical activity on a regular basis that needs a challenge in his/her day. These classes focus on enhancement of intensity, proper form and technique.

Advance- ****
For participants who are looking for a challenge to his/her normal day. These classes focus on advanced fitness moves, techniques and extra motivation to get you thru the class period.


Group Fitness Classes


The variety of fitness and wellness programs at Northern Michigan University guarantees you are sure to find an activity you will enjoy and that will lead to your improved health and well being. 


Advanced Yoga ****
If you have been practicing yoga and are ready for the next step, this is the class for you. Mary will introduce you to more challenging postures, breathing patterns, and other yoga practices.
Aqua Cardio **
This hour long class focuses on all areas of the body through precise aquatic movements. Come splash with us!
Ashtanga Yoga **
Ashtanga yoga is characterized by a dynamic series of postures that link movement to breath in order to build the body and purify the mind. Each week will follow a similar series of postures based on the original practice of Sri. Pattabhi Jois.
Basic Yoga *

If you’re a beginner to yoga, than this class is for you. You will be working just on the basics.

Beginning Cycling *
A class for those individuals who have never taken cycling. Starting out at an easy pace and building your base level of endurance.
Bosu **
Utilizing the bosu ball, which stands for both sides up, Heather demonstrates a plethora of core muscular specific and cardio exercises.
Circuit Express ***
If you are looking for a fast fun, all over exercise course, this 45 minute total body conditioning experience is for you!  This fast moving class conditions the cardio system and targets all major muscle groups. 
Core Conditioning ****
This class is an abdominal class consisting of stabilization techniques and strengthening of the torso, obliques, and lower back muscle groups.
Core Express ***
Have a half hour to spare? Then come work your abs with us. This class will focus solely on abs and alternative exercises to those sit-ups you've been doing for years!
Core and Spin Fusion ***
This class is designed to stress the cardiovascular core and flexibility systems all in one hour.
Cycle Express ***
An option for those on a tight schedule - Just 45 minutes of cardio will definitely kick up a great sweat!
Cycling ***
A great cardio workout performed on a stationary bike.  Our classes include music, upbeat cadence, and motivational instructors.  Hop on a bike and join us today!
Deep Water Aerobics *
This aqua aerobics class focuses on full body cardio and muscle conditioning in deep water. You will be provided with options to make each class as gentle or strenuous as you need to, but there will never be any impact to your body. You need not know how to swim. Come join us, whether you're just beginning an exercise program, or looking for a challenging new cross-training opportunity!
Hatha Yoga ****
Hatha yoga attempts to balance mind and body via physical postures, purification practices, breathing, and calming of the mind through relaxation and meditation.
Kettle Bell Pump ****
Come try our newest class this semester! Our certified Kettle Bell Pump instructor will guide you through an all over workout that will burn fat, tone muscle and work your cardio system to the max! Only 10 per class, so get here early!
Modern Dance/Pilates ***
This class fuses the art of Modern Dance movement and Pilates. All levels of experience are welcome! We will work on strength, balance and flexibility while developing creative movement and beautiful dancing. Come to this class to have fun and let loose!
Morning Ride **
Join us Monday mornings for a 45 minute ride. This class is the best way to start your mornings - getting your blood and legs pumping!
Morning Yoga *
This fun, comprehensive yoga class includes basic and intermediate postures, yogic breathing practices, and deep relaxation - a great way to start any work week.
Pilates **
Pilates will improve your strength, balance and flexibility through a series of fun and diverse mat exercises. After this class you will find yourself standing a little taller and feeling great!
Pilates Core Express **
Pilates Core Express is a half hour of mat exercises focused on strengthening the "powerhouse" or "core". Come to this class to get a fast and fun core workout!
Spinnin' and Strengthenin' ***
Its half spin and half strengthen. A great way to get some cardio in and some muscular endurance and strength in for an hour.
Step **
Ready to step your way into shape? Then this is the class for you! This class utilizes adjustable step benches as the base of the cardiovascular workout. Some step experience is suggested for this class, as we will be steppin' to an intermediate or advanced beat!
Steppin' Up **
This class provides cardio and strength training using an optional, adjustable bench. No experience necessary! Beginners, intermediate and advanced steppers can all get a great workout here.
The Ball ***
Using the Bosu and stability ball, this "core" class will add a variety into your everyday workout routine.
The Bar **
This class is 45 minutes long and utilizes the body bar. All exercises in this class are designed around using the body bar.
Ultimate Cycling ***
Come and join us for an hour, for the ultimate experience on a stationary bike!
Yoga + Pilates Flow **
Yoga and Pilates are combined here. We'll move breath by breath through the best of both disciplines, gaining strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and focus. Be prepared to sweat and relax at the same time. Beginners welcome.
