Tom Barnes was named the head coach of indoor and outdoor track in 2005 after serving as the assistant coach for three seasons. In his first year, the inaugural year of track and field at Northern Michigan University, Barnes led the team to a seventh-place finish at the GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Jennifer Lahr qualified for the 2004 NCAA II National Championships where she placed 14th in the 1,500-meter run.
He started and was the head track coach at Father Marquette Middle School from 1992-03. Barnes also coached in the USA Track and Field summer program for two years (1993-95), where his athletes competed in Michigan and Wisconsin state, regional and national meets.
From 1996-98, Barnes coached Nordic skiing as he was the head coach in 1997, where he organized and was the head of competition for USSA qualifying races and high school meet (1999). He organized and was the head of competition for FIS, national Nordic ski race series ski race. Barnes was the head of completion for the Noquemanon half marathon Nordic ski race from 1999-02.
Barnes has competed in the Boston, Huntsville, Columbus, Saginaw and Marquette marathons. He has competed at the Boston Marathon on three occasions, first time being in 1971. He participated in track and cross country at Pontiac Northern High School and at Central Michigan University. Barnes also played football at Pontiac Northern.
Barnes and his wife, Mary Kay, have two children, Christine and Catherine. He is the co-owner of Barnes Bros. Inc.
