Troy Mattson enters his fifth season as Northern Michigan University’s head women’s basketball coach. His four-year total is 38-68. Last year (2008-09) Mattson led the Wildcats to a 14-14 mark and a spot in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament. He led the Wildcats to a 6-19 mark in his inaugural 2005-06 season, was 9-18 in 2006-07 and 9-17 in 2007-08.
From 1994-2005, Mattson was the associate head coach of the NMU men’s basketball team and assistant coach from 1988. He also served as the head NMU women’s tennis coach from 1994-2003, where he was the GLIAC Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2002. His teams made three straight NCAA II tournament appearances 2001-03.
Prior to joining the Wildcat staff, he served as the assistant men’s and women’s basketball coach at Lake Superior State University from 1986-88.
He began his coaching career at Munising High School, where he was the boy’s basketball coach for the 1985-86 season.
A Milwaukee, Wis., native who grew up in Ishpeming, Mattson is a 1981 Westwood High School graduate. He earned his bachelor’s degree from NMU in 1986, where he was a four-time letterwinner (1982-85) as a point guard for the Wildcats. He was the 10th player in school history to score 1,000 career points.
Mattson is currently 27th on the career scoring list with 1,018 points. He is third in career assists with 486 and is tied for third in most assists in a single season with 187, along with Doug Ingalls. During his junior and senior years, Mattson helped lead the Wildcats to the NCAA II playoffs. He served as team captain his senior year.
Mattson and his wife, Lisa, have two daughters, Kristina and Tory.
