’Cat Nips:  Skated in 121 games with 30 points on 18 goals and 12 assists. Was one of the rookies to crack the regular lineup to earn first letter in 2006-07. Shoots left.

2008-09: Lettered for the third time. Skated in 40 games and registered a career-high seven assists and 14 points. Tied a career-high with a three-game point streak from 1/24-31/09 with 1-2-3. Had two multi-point games at Michigan State (10/24) with a line of 1-1-2 and against Michigan State (3/7) when he went 1-1-2. Had an assist each night at Western Michigan (1/30-31). Recorded a three-game point streak to tie a career high from 1/24-31/09 (1-2-3). Two-game goal streak was a career high from 2/7-13/09 (2-0-2).  

2007-08: Earned second letter by appearing in 40 games. Eight goals was a career high. Tied for the team lead with four game-winning goals. Scored two goals at Michigan State (10/26/07) for a career high. Had a three-game point streak from 11/17-24/07 and  3/15-21/08, both times with a goal and two assists, for a career high.

2006-07:  Appeared in 41 games. Tallied three goals. Scored first collegiate goal against Notre Dame (12/30) at 13:22 of the first period. Two of his three goals were first goals.

Before NMU:  Played for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the USHL in 2005-06. Skated in 53 games and put up the numbers of 5-14-19. Played for the Soo Indians in the NAHL during 2004-05. Named to the NAHL all-rookie team.

Personal:  A 2005 graduate of Sault Area High School. Likes to hunt and fish. Majoring in entrepreneurship. Uncle, Joe Shawhan, played hockey for Lake Superior State and was an assistant coach with the Lakers and is currently the director of hockey operations for NMU. Son of Bonnie and Mike Kaunisto. Younger brother, Kory, is currently a member of the team. Born on February 7, 1987.
