What is Upward Bound?

Upward Bound is a year-round educational opportunity program designed to help
high school students prepare for post-secondary education. Through the following
activities Upward Bound will help you develop the skills necessary to succeed in
post-secondary education after high school.

  • Tutoring
  • Skill building
  • Social activities
  • Cultural activities
  • College awareness
  • Career awareness
  • Personal counseling
  • Academic counseling


Who is eligible for Upward Bound?

If you come from a family that meets the federal income guidelines, and if neither of your
parents have completed a four-year college degree, you are eligible for Upward Bound.
You may apply if you are currently enrolled in 9th or 10th grade.

Students must be admitted into the program from one of the following schools:
  • Ishpeming High School
  • Marquette Senior High School
  • Negaunee High School
  • Westwood High School


How much does Upward Bound cost?

There is no cost to Upward Bound students. Upward Bound is sponsored by Northern Michigan University and federally funded by the United States Department of Education.


How does a student apply for admission?

To apply for admission to the Upward Bound program, go to the apply page, fill out the form and we will send you an application. You may also pick up an application in your high school guidance office.
