Upcoming flu clinics

Seasonal Flu Vaccine will be offered to the NMU Community at two sites on campus in the next few weeks.  Vaccination is recommended for anyone wishing to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza or transmitting the virus to others.

For your convenience, the following Flu Clinics have been scheduled:

 Thursday, October 6, 2011

      11am – 1pm       PEIF Rec Center

We strongly encourage you to take advantage of these flu clinics, but if this is not possible the vaccine will be available at the Health Center on a walk-in basis, ONLY after the clinics are completed.  Vaccine hours are Monday through Friday 8:15am – 11:00am and 1:15pm-3:30pm.

Cost for students is $25.00, and can be billed to your student account with your NMU IN#.  For employees, this is a covered benefit under the University Health Plan.  For retirees, please check your coverage to verify this is a covered benefit and present your insurance card at time of service.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has indicated that the sexually transmitted disease issue is huge, both in raw numbers of cases and the financial impact of sexually transmitted diseases (STD).

The CDC outlines on their website:

  • CDC estimates that there are approximately 19 million new cases of STDs each year in the United States, almost half of them among young people ages 15 to 24.

  • STDs have an economic impact: direct medical costs associated with STDs in the United States are estimated at $16.4 billion annually.

They also discuss the importance of STD testing and the impact of untreated STDs:

Untreated STDs can lead to serious long-term health consequences, especially for adolescent girls and young women. CDC estimates that undiagnosed and untreated STDs cause at least 24,000 women in the United States each year to become infertile.  The following links provide additional information about STDs.

Family planning is more than just birth control.  Family planning includes screening services that help find serious health problems, such as low blood iron, high blood pressure, and infections sooner.  The program covers:  office visits for family planning related services, prescriptions for birth control, contraceptive supplies and devices, lab tests, treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, and some sterilizations for women 21 years of age and older.  The program does not cover costs for infertility services and abortions.
