TITLE: Undergraduate Teaching Assistants
Basic Function and Responsibility:
The Teaching Assistant will work with a faculty member in the teaching of a UN 100 course as part of First Year Programs. This position involves helping first-time freshmen successfully make the transition to college through activities including: 1) moderating discussions, 2) planning activities and informational opportunities, 3) leading whole group and small group initiatives, and 4) serving as a role model, mentor, and liaison.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
- Attend ALL of the applicable FYP and UN 100 training sessions and meetings.
- Meet regularly with the assigned UN 100 faculty member to plan class, outside activities, etc.
- Work with the UN 100 faculty member to plan the syllabus and course content.
- Serve as a mentor and role model for academic, co-curricular, and leadership behaviors.
- Teach at least one lesson, lead discussions, present information, arrange activities, and meet with students outside of class as requested by the UN 100 faculty member.
- Provide appropriate advice and/or suggestions to the UN 100 faculty member, students, and others.
- Facilitate communication between the students and UN 100 faculty member.
- Meet with the UN 100 faculty member and block professors on request of the UN 100 faculty member.
- Be reasonably accessible to the UN 100 students.
- Provide assistance to include appropriate referrals to the students of UN 100.
- Participate in UN 391: Teaching Assistant Seminar.
- Dedicate an average of six hours per week for coursework or activities.
Supervision Received:
Supervision is received from the assigned UN 100 faculty member.
Supervision Exercised:
None.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Second year student with a minimum of 24 earned credit hours.
- 2.5 grade point average.
- Free from disciplinary probation in accordance with the NMU Student Code.
