Adopt a Flower Bed Program is a Success

In an effort to provide more color on campus, as well as provide volunteer opportunities for university students, groups, and departments, NMU Plant Operations sponsored the Adopt-A-Flower-Bed Program.  Incorporated in this program were fourteen groups of students, faculty, staff, as well as friends of NMU, who volunteered to plant and maintain nineteen flower beds around campus.

"This was a great success and I'm very pleased with the enthusiasm of the volunteers.  The beds were well maintained all summer and really had a positive impact on the campus grounds.  I look forward to working with the campus community on this again next year."- Terry Eilders, NMU Grounds Supervisor.

Requests for Summer Work Projects
Do you plan on purchasing any new equipment that requires utility connections such as gas, water, data, or electricity?  Do you have any construction or remodeling plans for your area?  If so, now is the time to begin discussing these projects with the Facilities Department. Time is needed to identify the project’s scope of work, estimate the construction cost, prepare bid documents, receive bids, and then finally begin construction.

In the revised campus master plan, one recommendation was to develop the area along Presque Isle Avenue that NMU owns, to have it feature shops, restaurants, office space and possibly student and 1 or 2-bedroom apartments that are attractive to students.  Northern has engaged in a feasibly study on this recommendation and invites all faculty, staff, students, alumni, community members and visitors to provide input by participating in a brief survey.

Energy Savings

lightswitchAs the university prepares for possible budget reductions, the NMU campus community is reminded it can immediately help both the budget and the environment through some simple energy-saving steps.  These include such things as turning off lights when a room will be empty more than five minutes, closing window shades at night and putting computers in the hibernation mode when they are not in use.
