Biographical Profile

Myra Grimes has been with the NMU cosmetology program for 20 years. She completed her baccalaureate degree in art prior to entering training in cosmetology, and this background in art has influenced her demonstrations in cosmetology. Professor Grimes’ performance with students shows a high interest level, interacting with enthusiasm and willingness to provide that extra degree of effort to assure the understanding in the learning process. She teaches a variety of beauty treatments, including hair styling, braiding and extensions, complexion, facials, makeup, waxing and tweezing, scalp treatments, histology and client patron protocol.  

Professor Grimes is active in all facets of the salon industry. She enjoys giving school demonstrations, assisting area youths in their career selections, as well as advising incoming students. She supports her students in state and national competitions, and is pleased to say that they have always placed high in these competitive activities. She also serves as a career mentor, allowing interested students to “job shadow” to further their career understanding and planning.

Professor Grimes maintains close connections with local businesses and stays active in community functions, including chaperoning students and volunteering time to do hair and makeup for the NMU theater and music departments for on-campus producations and local mall fashion shows. She has participated with her students in pageants, the Marquette Health Fair, and in a day of service to mothers and daughters along with local vendors at Landmark Inn. 

Professor Grimes has participated in the following committees: Faculty Evaluation Committee, Curriculum, Social, Academic Senate, Department Head Search, Ethnic and Cultural Diversity, and Dean’s Advisory Committee.

Professor Grimes’ philosophy for success is communication and a commitment to quality in every detail.
