Students at MTU can complete most of the BSW cluster minor requirements. For those requirements that cannot be filled at MTU, courses may be available from NMU through web-based instruction. The MTU Guide Sheet identifies courses that fill NMU BSW program requirements.
Note: The cluster minor is 28 credit hours. NMU courses are typically 4 credits; many transfer courses are 3 credits. If a student has completed a course in each of the designated areas of the minor and the credit hour total is less than 28 due to transfer course credits, the student may use electives from any discipline included in the minor in order to meet the 28 credit minimum.
The guide only identifies requirements for social work. In addition, students must complete liberal studies requirements and other graduation requirements for the university. Many BSW cluster minor courses also fill liberal studies requirements, but most students will need two courses in English composition, a course in visual and performing arts, and coursework in the humanities and math/natural science. Remember, this guide is unofficial; students should consult with a BSW program adviser to develop a plan of study.
During the senior year of the BSW program, all students complete a set of courses that includes field instruction. We make every effort to schedule these courses to meet one day per week so that students can complete field instruction (about 15 hours per week) on the remaining days. This schedule permits students the option of completing their field placements in their home communities and commuting to NMU for one day of classes. Field placements can be arranged throughout the Upper Peninsula.
