BSW Transfer Guide

Transfer form-pdf

More students transfer to NMU from Bay de Noc Community College than come from any other institution. The following information is intended to help guide students during their education at Bay de Noc CC in order to prepare them for a smooth transition into the BSW program. Students can essentially complete the NMU Liberal Studies requirements at Bay and most of the Human Behavior Cluster Minor. Some NMU courses are also available as Web-based offerings so that a student should be able to complete enough of the requirements at Bay to enable completion of the BSW within an additional two academic years.

During the senior year, all BSW students complete a 400 clock hour field placement (SW 480/481) for 8 credits. Required Social Work courses at the senior level are generally scheduled one day per week during the senior year. Field placements are routinely provided in and around Delta, Menominee and Dickinson counties, so that students can do their placements near home and only commute to NMU one day a week.

Completing all the requirements of the BSW degree within four years does require careful planning. For some students, an issue is whether or not to complete an Associates Degree at Bay before transferring to NMU. Doing so may be wise, if a student plans to seek employment at the associate degree level, or if one is uncertain about going on to immediately complete the BSW. On the other hand, completing the Associates Degree entails taking some courses that are unnecessary for the 124 credit hour BSW degree, and may require taking more than four years to complete all the requirements for both an Associates Degree and a BSW.

We have provided a Curriculum Guide, (Excel Spreadsheet option) that identifies what requirements for the BSW can be completed through Bay de Noc CC and what courses need to be completed through NMU. Requirements change from time to time, so be sure to consult with an advisor who is familiar with the NMU requirements. In addition to the Curriculum Guide, the NMU Registrar provides information on course equivalencies for NMU and many other colleges, including Bay de Noc CC. Again, requirements change and you may need to consult with the NMU Registrar and Social Work Program Director for the latest information. In some cases, there may be no direct equivalency between Bay courses and NMU courses, but course substitutions may be allowed. Students should check such arrangements carefully before enrolling in nonequivalent courses.

The following NMU courses that are required by the BSW Program have been frequently offered as web-based offerings. Although availability varies from term to term, Bay students in the BSW Program may be able to use one or more of these web courses to meet program requirements.
