BSW Program Advising

Assignment of advisers: Upon declaring a social work major, a student will be assigned to a social work faculty member of the Sociology and Social Work Department for academic advisement. The adviser will assist the student with curriculum and schedule planning as long as the student remains in pre-admission status. The adviser reviews and approves the application of the student to the upper division BSW Program. It is the BSW adviser's responsibility to:

1. Assist the student with course selection and schedule planning to meet the student's professional career goals.
2. Assist the student with career planning involving such issues as graduate school, volunteering, field placement setting preference, resume preparation and employment.
3. Communicate information about employment and graduate education opportunities to students and to other units such as the NMU JOBSearch Center.

Other advisement sources:
In addition to advisement provided by the student's personal adviser, the social work program includes the following professional advisement services:

1. The social work program maintains a display area with information on employment and graduate schools of social work. Additional information is provided through the department Web page.
2. The social work program provides all seniors with a descriptive listing of MSW programs available in the Midwest. Graduate school information is also available through Web links
3. Upon admission to the BSW program, all students are provided application materials for joining the National Association of Social Workers.
4. All BSW students are required to prepare a professional resume as an assignment in SW 474: Integrative Seminar II.
5. All BSW students are informed in SW 370 and again in SW 473 and SW 474 of requirements for Michigan Social Work Registration.
6. Referral is made to the NMU JOBSearch Center.

Advisers for social work: Every student majoring in social work has an assigned departmental faculty adviser. Students who have not yet entered the program should see the social work program director regarding advising questions. The following faculty advise social work majors:
