Preparing students to enter professional social work practice upon graduation is the primary goal of the social work program. Upon graduation, social work majors receive a bachelor of social work degree. In addition to courses taken in the sociology and social work department, students take courses from several disciplines that provide them with the skills and knowledge necessary to analyze social problems and to carry out interventions.
Graduates are prepared to enter professional positions in a wide array of social work settings. Social workers can find employment in several fields, including health care, juvenile justice and services for the elderly. In addition to entering professional employment upon graduation, many BSW graduates opt to complete an advanced degree, such as a master’s of social work.
