Thirty-four years teaching experience at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Teaching interests include the sociology of marriage and family, family change, and family violence. Teaching experience includes the following: Introduction to Sociology, Marriage and Family, Social Psychology of Groups, Human Sexuality, Family Problems, Sociology of Sex Roles, Family Research, Comparative Family Systems, Seminar in Changing American Family, and Seminar in Family Violence.
Research interests focus on family violence, particularly violence in intimate partner relationships. Research publications include over 20 book chapters and articles in professional journals, including the American Journal of Sociology, Family Perspectives, Family Relations, Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice, Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, Journal of Divorce, Journal of Family Violence, Journal of Marriage and the Family, Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, Justice Quarterly, Sex Roles, Sociological Focus, Violence Against Women, Violence and Victims. Author of the book Screwtape: Letters on Alcohol. Most recent interest is in the relationship between alcohol abuse and intimate partner violence.
Recipient of research grants from local, state and national agencies, including the National Institute of Justice. Delivered numerous research papers at family, sociology, and criminology professional conferences, and has given frequent presentations and training workshops for both businesses and community groups including judges, police, medical personnel, social workers, teachers and clergy.
