Domestic Violence Video

Video

A new video created by NMU and sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield shatters the myth that alcohol causes men to be violent. Four survivors of domestic violence willingly shared their experiences on camera in the hope that other women will not accept alcohol as an excuse or be less likely to seek help because of the dangerous illusion that, if the drinking stops, so will the abuse.  Full story

Mikhail Balaev, who recently defended his doctoral dissertation, has published an article on international trade and democracy in the  Fall '09 issue of Sociological Perspectives. Mikhail's specialties are quantitative methods, globalization and social organization.

A Cultural Connection

Student Research Experience

Some are investigating rural homelessness with social work faculty Tim Hilton and Cornell DeJong. Several students are assisting anthropologist Alex Carroll on Yellow Dog Plains and Native American projects.

Vachon is Outstanding Graduating Senior

Francois Vachon was selected as the Sociology and Social Work Department’s Outstanding Graduating Senior.  He has worked as a tutor, a counselor at Bay Cliff Health Camp and a research assistance.  He plans to pursue a doctorate.
