The department has offered two forums this fall. "Our Constitutional Right to Counsel: Why Public Defense Reform?" was the September forum and featured Maureen Dimin, who directs the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers' indigent defense reform efforts. "Changing Michigan: A U.P. PS 319 Women and U.S. Politics

Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, Nancy Pelosi… The involvement of women in government and politics continues to increase, and capture the spotlight worldwide.  This course will cover a breadth of issues related to women and politics, including Hilary Clinton level and forms of political participation, public policies related to women and the role of women in American politics and society.


What's the Matter with Monism?
Jonathon AllenThat’s the question political science professor Jonathan Allen asks of this philosophy of unity in the journal Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy.  He poses, “If the connection between monism and totalitarian politics is a possibility rather than a logical necessity, value-pluralists must consider what their attitude towards non-totalitarian monisms should be….  When a conflict between values is experienced, rather than treating the conflict as unavoidable, we should seek to eliminate it by reconstructing and harmonizing the meanings of the values involved.” This paper explores concepts of positive liberty, justice, and proposes that types of monism may be located on a continuum.
