Jazz not once, but twice

Jazz fans will get a treat as the NMU Music Department offers two jazz concerts in October.  Friday, Oct. 9, the NMU Faculty/Student Jazz Combo will perform “Kind of Blue – A 50th Anniversary Concert,” highlighting the milestone anniversary of Miles Davis’ classic 1959 album, Kind of Blue.  On Tuesday, Oct. 13, the NMU Jazz Band kicks off the year with works by Sammy Nestico, Jerry Gray, Richard Rodgers and others, including some original works by student composers.  Both concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Reynolds Recital Hall in Hedgcock.

Fall Full of Music

The NMU Music Department will give 15 performances during the fall semester: six in October, four in November and five in December. Most concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. , have no admission charge and are performed in Northern’s beautiful Reynolds Recital Hall in C.B. Hedgcock, but be sure to check the schedule for complete details. Mahogany is Festival Performer

Kevin Mahogany will be the NMU Jazz Festival’s featured performer.  Newsweek described Mahogany as “… the standout jazz vocalist of his generation.”  The NMU Jazz Festival takes place Friday, April 16.  High school and middle school bands and combos that wish to participate should register as early as possible as space is limited. Music was the focus of the summer 2009 issue of Northern Horizons, NMU’s alumni magazine. The cover story “Making Music” focused on opportunities and relationships that are cultivated through NMU’s Music Department. Other stories featured several NMU alumni and their musical experiences. Marching Band

Don’t miss seeing the NMU Marching Band in action.  The band will perform at before and after the Wildcat football home games, as well as during halftime.  Here are the dates for this season’s performances at the Superior Dome:

Oct. 10 vs. Wayne State, 1 p.m.
Oct. 17 vs. Hillsdale, 1 p.m, Band Day
Nov. 7 vs. Indianapolis, 1 p.m., Senior Day

Come and cheer on the Wildcats of the football team and marching band!

Music Scholarship Auditions

Scholarship auditions will again be held winter semester 2010. The schedule for next years auditions for the fall 2010 and winter 2011 semesters are as follows:

  • 11:00 am on Nov. 7, 2009
  • Noon on Feb. 20, 2010
  • 11:00 am March 20, 2010
