I am Cadet Hannah Cerney, a junior Forensic Biochemistry student here at NMU and this is my third year in the ROTC program. I graduated high school in May of 2007 from West Salem High School in West Salem, WI. I graduated in the top 10% of my class with varsity letters in both Volleyball and Softball.
I decided to attend Northern Michigan University mainly because I was interested in the Forensic Biochemistry major. Forensic science has been an interest of mine since middle school, and finding a major that specializes in that area is a rare occurrence. While researching for the school, I discovered that they had an ROTC program, I became immediately interested since my dad made a career of the Army. After spending my entire life around the Army, I had a pretty good understanding of what made a good and bad soldier, and I figured I would be a pretty good candidate for ROTC. When I came on my first college visit, I immediately fell in love with the area and I knew right away I wanted to attend school here.
During my time in the ROTC program, I have participated in a number of volunteer opportunities through the program. I have been an active member of the color guard club, and this semester I was the captain of our school’s female Ranger Challenge team. This last summer, I had the opportunity to attend Airborne school in Ft. Benning, GA where I had the opportunity to complete 5 successful jumps out of a C-130 aircraft to earn my jump wings. I have held several leadership positions while in the program to include team leader, squad leader and company 1st sergeant.
