Payne HallResidents of Payne Hall continue their learning outside of the classroom.  Payne Hall provides residents with an academically focused atmosphere in all of its houses.  Also included in Payne Hall is an academic house where residents are expected to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA throughout the academic year.  Payne Hall provides a safe, friendly environment that promotes education, fellowship, and community.  Volunteering in the Marquette community is a focus for Payne Hall residents and is apparent in their dedication to the Superior Edge Program at NMU.  Payne Hall is made up of one all male house, one all female house, and four co-ed housess. Payne Hall is building number 68 on the campus map.

Resident Director – Kate Sartori, 227-2516

Kate SartoriKate Sartori is the Resident Director of Payne Hall. Kate is originally from Milford, Michigan. She graduated in May 2009 from Northern with a degree in Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management and a minor in Environmental Conservation. She has worked on campus for five years including three as a Resident Adviser in Halverson Hall and one summer as a Community Adviser in Woodland Park.  Kate is looking forward to working with the students and staff of Payne Hall and continuing her time at NMU. In her free time she enjoys canoeing, rock climbing, and basketball

Payne Hall Traditions

History:

Payne Hall was opened in 1965 and is named after Lucille Payne, who taught English and speech at the J.D. Pierce School and later was an instructor in NMU’s English department.

Traditions:

  • Payne Hall Halloween Party for local children
  • End of the Year BBQ Pork and Fest
  • Academic Tradition
  • Goodwill Games – in-hall challenge

Interesting Facts:

  • Payne Hall’s first floor has a brother/sister house: Playground and Springfield.
  • A quiet hall, Payne is home to the first- and second-year NMU Wildcat hockey players.
  • Payne Hall is the only all-academic hall on campus.
  • In 1971 Payne Hall was the first to go co-ed on campus.
  • Payne Hall has it's own website.
