Meyland HallCreating a comfortable balance between academic achievement and social development, Meyland Hall provides students with a clean, encouraging, and safe environment that quickly feels like home. Meyland is built around student creativity and tradition. The most notable traditions in Meyland Hall are the Meyland Hall Diversity Banner. This banner is signed by a large number of Meyland residents -past and present- and is displayed where everyone can see as they enter the hall. The students really take pride in it, and Meyland tries to host events each year that center on diversity awareness for the hall. Meyland Hall was completely renovated during the summer of 2006 and is a LEED certified building. . Meyland is all co-ed and is building number 70 on the campus map.

Note: Due to the type of furniture in the Meyland Hall rooms, lofts are not permitted. Loft kits manufactured to fit the beds are available for rent

Resident Director – Megan Butcher, 227-2815

Megan ButcherMegan Butcher, from Woodbury, Minnesota, will be beginning her second year as the Resident Director of Meyland Hall. In addition to this role, Megan supervises the Magers-Meyland Front Desk and works closely with the USOEC, which house Olympic training residents on Meyland Hall’s 3rd floor. She received her Communication degree from Winona State University in May 2008. Before NMU, Megan was a Resident Assistant for 2 years and Assistant Hall Director for 1 year at Winona State. In her spare time, Megan loves to watch movies, dance, read the latest tabloid, shop, and laugh with friends and residents.

Meyland Hall Traditions

History:

Meyland Hall is named after Gunther Meyland, a professor of English for 37 years.  It opened in 1966.

Traditions:

  • Meyland/Magers Wars
  • Valentine's Day Spaghetti Dinner
  • Meyland Hall Diversity banner- This banner is signed by a large number of Meyland residents (past and present,) and is displayed  where everyone can see as they enter the hall. The students really take pride in it, and Meyland tries to host events each year that center around diversity awareness for the hall.
  • Monthly “all-hall” discussions in the lobby draw a large number of residents. Meyland residents talk about current events and what students would like to do to become proactive in the residence hall community

Interesting Facts:

  • Meyland Hall shares space with the United States Olympic Education Center.
  • Olympic Speedskaters Apolo Anton Ohno and Shani Davis lived in Meyland.
  • Meyland is unique in that it's the only building with four RAs on staff.
  • As of October 15, 2007 Meyland Hall became one of the first residence halls in the Midwest to become LEEDs certified.
