The Mission of NMU's Housing and Residence Life Office

Alexander Astin, in his book Achieving Educational Excellence, states that "students learn by becoming involved" and discusses the relationship between the amount of energy they devote to their educational experiences and learning.  Students who live on campus are immersed in a unique environment full of opportunities for interpersonal connections and meaningful involvement. The mission for the Housing and Residence Life Office reflects this approach:

The mission of the Housing and Residence Life Office is to make significant contributions to student learning by providing excellent service, well-managed facilities, and a residential environment rich with opportunities for personal growth and social development, especially those which result from student interaction with others, participation in community development activities, and involvement in other aspects of campus life.

Students will get to know one another, establish community expectations and goals, and do things together and in doing so will create lasting relationships and become more confident individuals.
