Welcome to the Department of Geography at Northern Michigan University!

Splunking

Greetings,

The start of each academic year is always a time of anticipation and excitement; this is especially true in the Department of Geography as we look forward to another great year.

Faculty and staff in the Department continue to develop plans for a new curriculum, work to improve relationships with students and other Departments, along with widening our connections with the local and regional community.  Of particular note, Dr. Regis is on sabbatical leave for the fall semester and his courses are being taught by a number of outstanding adjunct faculty:

Shawn Carlson (GC260 Rocks and Minerals), Dan Wiitala (GC465 Hydrology), and Becky Simmons (GC255 Physical Geology).  In addition, William Sved will be teaching a second section of the always popular ENV101 Introduction to Environmental Science.  All of these courses currently have openings; check to see if you have room in your schedule and if you meet the pre-requisites listed.

Due to the incredible generosity of Shawn Carlson, we are particularly pleased to say that each student who takes GC260 this fall will receive (free of charge) a reference mineral collection - which includes small diamonds and small gold nuggets, a professional grade compass, a brand new rock hammer with hand lenses, and a Copper Country mine tour paid in full; there may be other freebies by the time Shawn is done teaching the class.

This course has a pre-requisite of GC 255 but if you have a strong geology interest and the course fits into your schedule, please contact Shawn at shawncarlson@hotmail.com to inquire further about enrollment eligibility.

As part of NMU's Welcome Weekend, the Geography Department has an early opportunity for you to reconnect with the local area.  On Friday, August 21 there will be an Environmental History Hike of Presque Isle led by Dr. Anderton.  This two-mile jaunt through the Park will involve visiting ancient prehistoric and historic archaeological sites including a silver mine from the 1840s and a copper culture campsite that is over 4000 years old.  Individuals interested in participating should meet at the Presque Isle Pavilion at 10 a.m.

An Open House will follow within the Department office (3001 New Science Building); light refreshments will be served.

These events are a great opportunity for you and any family members/friends to connect with us.

The Geography Department, as a whole, strongly believes in the importance of developing a relationship with our majors and minors.  Please don't hesitate to contact our office if you have any questions or concerns; we want to see you succeed and are here to help.  As a final note, keep your eyes posted for upcoming student-related events sponsored by the Superior Geography Club (SGC), Environmental Science Organization, NMU Rock and Mineral Club, and Students for Sustainable Living; we encourage you to get involved in more than just the academic aspect of the Department.

Sincerely,

Dr. John B. Anderton, PhD, RPA
