Northern Michigan University’s Geography Departmen
t offers a major, minor and certification program in geography information systems, or GIS. The program integrates the GIS courses with computer science, statistics and other courses. NMU coordinates its GIS program with the university notebook computer initiative.
NMU geography students are equipped with a portable GIS lab. Students receive the latest ESRI and ERDAS (links in the ESRI and ERDAS websites) software installed on their laptops and they work towards completing exercises at times convenient to their own schedules, rather than being forced to be on campus during open lab times.
The program also has a fully equipped GIS and spatial analysis lab. The lab is equipped with survey grade GPS equipment, laptop docking stations, wide screen flat panel monitors, printers, a 44-inch poster plotter, 44-inch wide format scanner and an enterprise file server.
