The NMU geography department is among the sponsors of a public film series titled “Preparing Marquette for a Future Without Oil.” A different film is shown and discussed one Wednesday evening each month at Peter White Public Library. The remaining films are Money as Debt, April 29; The Power of Community, May 27; and What a Way to Go, June 10.  The films already shown (but available for checkout at the library) were: Taken for a Ride, Crude Awakening, Crude Impact and End of Suburbia.

News and Information
Laptop computer NMU’s GIS lab was recently upgraded with a new mainframe server.  Additionally students minoring in GIS or taking GIS courses can now go to the NMU Help Desk to have all the required GIS and remote sensing software available to the department added to their notebook computers, thus making their ThinkPads portable GIS labs.  “This is quite an asset to our students in the GIS program,” said geography professor Robert Legg.

Outstanding Graduate

MikelsonColleen Mikelson was selected as the Geography Department’s Outstanding Graduating Senior.  She was recognized at the NMU Honors Banquet.  Mikelson, an environmental science major, has served as the vice president of the Environmental Science Organization and a member of the GTU geography honors society, and was active in campus organizations and club sports.   Mikelson profile

BeachWhat can you do with a major in geography?  All kinds of things.  Some career fields that recruit geography graduates include business, international organizations, environmental organizations and the tourism industry.


Alum Wins Nobel Prize

NelsonFrederick "Fritz" Nelson '73, professor of geography at the University of Delaware and 2007 NMU Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus, is a member of a group working within the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with former U.S. Vice President Al Gore. IPCC is a science body advising the United Nations on the dangers of global warming.
