Online Middle Grade Endorsement

To help middle and high school teachers meet their state’s requirements for at least six graduate-level credits focusing on the middle school, NMU now offers a two-course series designed to acquaint teachers with special aspects of teaching at the middle school level. Finish all six credits in one summer or take the courses at your convenience. Both courses will be offered during the following semesters:  Fall 2007, Winter 2008 and Summer 2008.

The Middle School – ED 460  3 credits  

This course focuses on middle-grade philosophy, middle-grade curriculum and instruction, and instructional methods for designing and teaching developmentally appropriate programs (i.e., addressing the cognitive, emotional and physical development of each child) in the middle grades, including content-area (e.g., science, social sciences) reading instruction.

Psychology of Adolescent Learning – ED 595  3 credits  

Psychology of Adolescent Learning is a fascinating introduction to adolescent development and learning in school, family, peer, and community contexts. This course provides a framework for understanding influences of ethnicity and culture on adolescents' cognitive, physical, and social development. Topics include adolescent motivation, changing roles, sexuality, coping behaviors, moral reasoning, achieving an identity, and creating healthy learning environments for adolescents. The course focus is on grades 6-9.
