Message from the Director

Rodney ClarkenGreetings and welcome to NMU’s School of Education web site.

We hope you find your visit to our web site enlightening and fruitful. You are visiting the Web site of what I feel is one of the best teacher education programs in the country. What makes NMU teacher education so good, you might ask?

  1. The people: The quality of our program depends on the quality of our faculty, staff and clinical supervisors. Not only are the faculty, staff and K-12 teachers that you work with excellent at what they do, but they take a personal interest in helping you become the best teacher you can be.
  2. The standards: We have high expectations for those who are becoming teachers and we hold to those standards. If you can get into and stay in our program, you can be confident that when you graduate, you will be among the best prepared new teachers in the country.
  3. The experiences: As an NMU candidate to become a teacher, you will be involved in many area schools gaining experience in developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to be an effective teacher.

And why would you want to graduate from NMU’s teacher education program?

  1. High success rate: Our teacher graduates are highly regarded by employers and have a high reputation among their colleagues.
  2. High placement rate: Though teaching jobs are limited in our region and state, our graduates have been very successful in finding teaching jobs in other regions.
  3. Costs vs. benefits: NMU is one of the least expensive schools in Michigan and the Midwest and offers great benefits. Among the benefits are having a new laptop on a campus that is wirelessly connected and well supported, living in a small, safe, supportive and friendly community and campus and being surrounded by a beautiful environment. NMU teacher education students were ranked with the most expensive and selective private and public schools in Michigan (Kalamazoo, Calvin, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Michigan State University) for the highest initial and cumulative percentage pass rates on the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification.

The NMU teacher education faculty and staff look forward to meeting and greeting you when you come to campus. Enjoy your visit.
