Northern Michigan University’s Economics Department takes pride in its longstanding tradition one that emphasizes the application of the economic way of thinking to relevant and current economic conditions. Our students gain a solid understanding of the way property rights, social institutions, and market and political processes affect real-world economic activity from local to global levels.
The department offers a general economics major and minor, as well as a secondary education major and minor. Additionally, the department teaches several of the liberal studies courses required for the foundations of social sciences division.
An economics degree provides graduates a mastery of economic-related theories. It also helps to develop many other skills, such as critical thinking, writing, speaking, reading and researching. These are all vital competencies for today’s 21st century global citizen and employee.
The Economics Department is proud its graduates have found jobs in teaching, government, banking, investments and commodities, financial advising, insurance, law and politics. Many of our graduates are entrepreneurs who own their own businesses.
