Mr. Alexander graduated from NMU with a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice and earned his Master of Arts degree in Administrative Service with an emphasis in Public Administration from the Political Science Department at NMU.

He has been an Adjunct Instructor with the Criminal Justice Department for over ten years, and teaches, Introduction to Criminal Justice online as well as in the classroom. He also teaches Corrections Function, Roles of the Correctional Client and Correctional Institutions. He is also an Instructor in the First Year Program, which focuses on first year students as they make the transition from high school to college.

Jim works for the Michigan Department of Corrections as an Assistant Deputy Warden at Marquette Branch Prison. He began his career with the MDOC in 1994 as a Case Manager at the Alger Correctional Facility in Munising Michigan. He transferred to Marquette in 1996 and was promoted to Classification Director and then to Department Analyst in the Warden's Office. He was promoted to Assistant Deputy in 2001. He has been the Assistant Deputy for Programs, Housing and currently oversees the Custody Division. He is also the Accreditation Manager for MBP which includes ensuring that the prison is accredited by the American Correctional Association.

For the past five years, he has been a facilitator with the MDOC Leadership Program. The program involves providing leadership programs to administrators and includes classroom instruction, presentations and analytical and practical skill building activities. The program employs prevailing organizational leadership modules applicable to organizations and includes specific techniques for criminal justice agencies.

Jim was selected by the Professional Development Section of the MDOC to lead the organization as it implements the Michigan Prisoner Re-entry Initiative. The initiative is based on a national model directed at reducing recidivism and prisoner populations.

He was also recently selected and trained by the National Institute of Corrections to become an auditor in conducting Prison Security Audits throughout the United States.

Mr. Alexander graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1996 with a master's in administrative services with a concentration in public administration. He also earned a bachelor's in criminal justice from NMU. He has worked as a guest lecturer at NMU for criminal justice forum and interviewing/interrogation courses. He teaches the corrections courses as well as CJ 110 Introduction to Criminal Justice, and is an instructor in the First Year Program. He currently works at the Marquette Branch Prison in Marquette where he has worked as a case manager, classification director and department analyst in the warden's office. He is now an assistant deputy warden.
