Advising for Graduate Students
In order to assist graduate students with regard to his/her master’s degree requirements it is essential that the adviser know what courses you have completed and which ones are still needed. Please use the following guidelines:
- Adviser: to find out the name of your adviser, log onto My NMU and click on “student Services” tab; under “Student Records,” select “View Student Information;” scroll down to “Primary Adviser.”
- Plan of Study: You will be required to complete/update your plan of study form after you have completed 12 graduate credits and submit it to the department for approval.
- In future discussions with your adviser you will be expected to provide him/her with a copy of the plan of study form. It is recommended that you use the interactive form so you can save it to your computer and update it on a regular basis.
- Registering for Courses: In preparation for registering for courses, work out a tentative list of courses you should/would like to take. Refer to the respective semester course offerings at My NMU.
- Graduating: If you are graduating, you must register for CA 000: Graduation within the first four days of the semester. You can do this by going to My NMU and registering for it like any other course.
- Thesis Committee: In preparation for your thesis, start thinking about who you want to serve on your thesis committee and initiate the thesis compensation application form the semester prior to the semester you want to enroll in your thesis. Three members are required for your committee; two must be from the Criminal Justice Department and one can be from another department. Only faculty who have graduate faculty status will be eligible to serve on your graduate committee.
- Thesis Procedures: As you near the completion of your core and elective credits, start reviewing the thesis procedures guidelines to ensure you allow yourself ample time to prepare your prospectus and complete the necessary thesis registration form in time to register for the thesis course (CJ 599). Your prospectus must be included with the thesis registration.
- Prospectus Completion Guidelines: Review these guidelines to assist you in preparing your prospectus. The prospectus must be submitted with your form to register for thesis research credits (CJ 599).
- Questions: Have a list of questions you need answered by your adviser.
