Mission Statement

The Department of Criminal Justice is one of the departments located in the College of Professional Studies at Northern Michigan University.  It is the central purpose of the department to provide both traditional and non-traditional students with a comprehensive knowledge of the CJ system and the complexities associated with social control in a free, multi-cultural society.  Within the context of a liberal arts education, the department is committed to preparing students for future CJ careers and/or future education by fostering the development of positive values, perspectives, and maturity in its students.  The department faculty are committed to teaching, research, and service, and carrying out these responsibilities in a collegial environment that stresses cooperation and consensus.
