Ms. Sue Young received Northern Michigan University’s 2008 Excellence in Service Award. This award recognizes outstanding and distinguished performance and service in support of the university’s goals and mission. Sue is the principal secretary for the NMU Criminal Justice department and was recommended by her supervisor, Dr. Dale Kapla, for her exemplary service.
Sue has been with the Criminal Justice Department since 1998, and employed with the university since 1972. During that time, she has achieved continuous “exceptionally effective” annual performance ratings. This exemplary performance, coupled with her enormous contributions to furthering the goals of this department and the university, warranted this special recognition. During the past three years, the department has undergone numerous changes. During this time, the department lost its department head while he served the university in different capacities for the administration. Two faculty members served as acting department head, and it was Sue’s expertise and knowledge of the department’s administration and curriculum that the department did not suffer any negative impact and business as usual prevailed. In addition, the department worked diligently by putting their Master in Criminal Justice degree, they developed and implemented a new Bachelor in Loss Prevention Management degree; and they made numerous improvements to their criminal justice curriculum. Sue spent numerous hours tracking students who were interested in the programs by assisting them in getting admitted to the university and helping them register for classes. Her diligence prevailed and as a result, the department’s enrollment has grown to be the third largest major on campus.
Ms. Young will be recognized at the Faculty and Staff Recognition Luncheon held in the Great Lakes Rooms of the University Center. She will also receive a monetary gift in recognition for her hard work and dedication to the university.
