During the semester, forensic biochemistry major Stephanie Johnson of Lansing presented a seminar outlining her experience with the Michigan State Police Crime Lab. Johnson, who is also in NMU's Honors Program, is serving a one-year internship with the lab.



LaFleur Named 'Outstanding'

Tori LaFleur has been selected as the Chemistry Department’s Outstanding Graduating Senior.   LaFleur, an Escanaba native, graduates with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, one of five NMU students to do so in 2008-09. She plans to attend graduate school to pursue studies in genetics.  More details

Mercury Analyzer Student Eric Schacht and professor John Ejnik use the new Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) to analyze trace metals. The purchase of the equipment was made possible through an NSF Major Research Instrumentation grant. The grant proposal was spearheaded by professor Enjik.

test tubes The department has suspended its non-ACS chemistry and water science majors for 2007-08 and will review those programs.  The chemistry-ACS certified major differs from the chemistry-non ACS degree in that the certified version prepares students to meet the minimum standards set forth by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society.
Learning Crime Lab Techniques

LabNMU’s forensic biochemistry program enters its second year with 27 majors. This interdisciplinary program, which incorporates chemistry, biology and criminal justice, prepares students for entry-level jobs in government or private forensic laboratories.


Donations to Equip Labs
Drawer plaqueDonations to the NMU Chemistry Department of $100 or more are recognized with a brass plate inscribed with the donor’s name on a student drawer in one of our teaching laboratories. The majority of private gifts to the department are used to equip our labs. Thank you to the many alumni and friends who have helped to with this effort.

Research with Impact
  • NMU Alumnus Mike Carpenter, is researching how enzymes affect DNA mutation. He has published five papers and successfully defended his dissertation at Wayne State University. More info.
  • mccormickProfessor Frankie McCormick received a grant to study the properties of organic compounds that may be used in computer and LCD devices.
