Department Purchases ICP-OES

Student Eric Schacht and professor John Ejnik use the new Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) to analyze trace metals. The purchase of the equipment was made possible through an NSF Major Research Instrumentation grant. The grant proposal was spearheaded by professor Enjik.

	The department has suspended its non-ACS chemistry and water science majors for 2007-08 and will review those programs. The chemistry-ACS certified major differs from the chemistry-non ACS degree in that the certified version prepares students to meet the minimum standards set forth by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society.

NMU’s forensic biochemistry major enters its second year with 27 majors. This interdisciplinary program, which incorporates chemistry, biology and criminal justice, prepares students for entry-level jobs in government or private forensic laboratories. Donations to Equip Labs
Donations to the NMU Chemistry Department of $100 or more are recognized with a brass plate inscribed with the donor’s name on a student drawer in one of our teaching laboratories. Faculty Research
Professor John Ejnik is conducting research on trace metal analysis and creating a lab to measure elements, such as mercury and cadmium. Professor Frankie McCormick received a grant to study the properties of organic compounds that may be used in computer and LCD devices.
