Study in Maine this Summer

Students of last winter's BI 495A course had a chance to travel to Maine and complete 495B at the Shoals Marine Lab on Appledore Island this past May. The students participated in field laboratories and conducted their own research projects while exploring the biology of the islands and the surrounding Atlantic Ocean. Each semester, the department offers unique learning opportunities outside the classroom. More information

Outstanding Graduating Senior

The 2008 outstanding graduating senior in the Biology Department was Amanda Moraska of Menomonie, Wis. She was also the recipient of the same award for for the Department of Modern Languages and Literature.

Outstanding Graduate Student

The 2008 outstanding graduate student in the Biology Department was Lara Esser from Goettingen, Germany.

Winn Chairs Department

Rob Winn has taken over the duties as interim department head of the Biology Department. Winn, who came to NMU in 1999, teaches human anatomy, human physiology, endocrinology and advanced animal physiology. He also oversees the department's research being done in conjunction with the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center.
