Each year, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Marquette presents Severe Weather Storm Spotter Safety Courses across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The presentations are free and open to the public. The program provides details on why storm spotters are so vitally important to the weather warning process, how to become a weather spotter, and how to submit reports to the National Weather Service. The program is also open to general weather enthusiasts who want to learn more about the weather.
This year’s National Weather Service talk covers many important aspects of weather reporting and safety such as thunderstorm ingredients, lightning and hail development, lightning safety, how tornadoes and waterspouts form, tornado safety, National Weather Service severe weather criteria, what to report to the National Weather Service, how to make a good wind estimate, cloud formations, and how to receive weather information.

Don Rutter writes of his experiences during and after World War II on his Web Site. Search online for Long March into Oblivion or just Don Rutter Michigan to find his Web site and read his horrendous story.
Don is now an 89-year-old war veteran living at Lost Creek in Marquette, restoring his Model A Ford and writing more of his story. He has a great sense of humor and says that questions from other people help him to recall things he has long repressed. This event is planned as a conversation, not a “speech.”

In the 1870s B. F. Childs came to the Marquette area and set up shop as a photographer. At a time when many photographers specialized in studio portraits, Childs instead spent a lot of time traveling with his camera. He photographed mines, towns, the natives and scenery including the Pictured Rocks and the shore of Lake Superior from a small boat. These photos were published as "Gems of Lake Superior". Jack Deo, the winner of the 2008 Peter White award, has gathered a collection of B. F. Childs work and will share it with us along with some information about the award winning Mr. Childs.

The Negaunee High School Global Awareness Project addresses issues ranging from hunger and poverty to the environment. The students coordinated a unique Hunger Awareness Dinner raising money for a Bolivian project that feeds in excess of 250 children and helps mothers learn marketable skills. The students were connected to the project by NHS graduate Sarah Houghton who as a 2002 Rotary exchange student, served as a translator helping build the Comedor de Niños Etta Turner in Bolivia. Currently Sarah is the project’s micro-credit coordinator.
We’ll see a video and hear from the students about their unusual dinner and other environmental initiatives. They will also provide information
on ways that we can take action to help reduce poverty and hunger and increase our personal “greening” efforts.
Participants will be able to see and purchase beautiful handmade items by the Comedor mothers.

In the 1800's St. Louis was the final outpost for the push westward, "The Gateway to the West". The arch’s official name the "Jefferson National Expansion Monument" commemorates his part in the Louisiana Purchase. In the early 60s the structural design, fabrication, and erection of the arch was recognized as a significant accomplishment.
Roger will give us brief introduction to the subject; we’ll watch a 30-minute video on the building of the arch; then following the video Roger will answer our questions

This tour takes you from Marquette to Copper Harbor and back for what should be a great spring waterfall tour. Along the way you will learn the history of the area and see some of the finest waterfalls in the Keweenaw including Hungarian, Copper Manganese, and Silver Falls. Time permitting you will also see the falls at the mouth of the Montreal River, the top of Brockway Mountain, Lac La Belle and the Bete Grise Lighthouse.
Note: This tour is designed for able-bodied persons in relatively good shape and capable of navigating a forest trail that may be wet and slippery. If you are not sure-footed, this tour is not for you.
The tour price includes professional tour guide services and deluxe van transportation.

Don and Mary Snitgen, well-known area naturalists will teach us where to go, what and how to look and listen for, what binoculars work best, and other tips for beginning birders, with the added bonus of looking for and identifying wildflowers. We’ll carpool from the Berry Event Center east parking lot to some prime birding areas along the Big Bay Road.
The best time to view birds is early, early morning but we are compromising the time and meeting at the advanced hour of 7 a.m. The black flies and other pesky critters may be out by this time so wear appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes, and bring some bug repellant. We will go regardless of weather, so bring rain gear if it looks like rain!

Join Lou Ann, one of the original three organizers of the UP 200’s, and the race’s official and ongoing timekeeper, Dick, to learn how the concept of the UP200 sled dog races began. An overview with slides, photos and other informational pieces will describe a brief history of how the races started, and how interested mushers and their sled dogs are solicited. Class participants will quickly come to appreciate the vast amount of planning, organization, preparation, financing, volunteer help, etc., required for this now well-known, popular major winter Marquette and UP event.

Maintaining air and water quality during mining and mitigating post-mining impacts are important aspects of planning and operations at the Empire and Tilden Mines. This tour will begin at the operating mines with a view of the plant sites, a review of rock stockpile reclamation and a visit to an active tailings impoundment. We will then proceed to the Republic Mine which closed in 1996 to view the reclaimed pit and plant site and the Republic Wetlands Preserve that has been created on the tailings basins.
Although we’re not planning a lunch break, please tuck a snack in your pocket or purse if you think you’ll need the nourishment before our return.

An artist who paints en plein air has an adventurous spirit and love of nature.
We will meet each day at the Arts and Culture Center of the Peter White Library for orientation and/or instruction. Then, weather permitting, we will then move to our site for the day. If necessary, we can stay to paint at the library until 3:30. If we are "on location" we may stay out somewhat longer. Our focus will be on fun, and our goal is your satisfaction.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS: Bettie has had lessons with nationally prominent artists, including Tony Coats and Zolton Zabo, but considers herself a perpetual learner. Liz is a graduate of the Kendall School of Design and has studied watercolor with Nita Engle. She is a professional artist with murals in several public buildings and businesses around Marquette, as well as many private homes.

Rain or shine! Come enjoy an afternoon at Dancing Crane Farm in Skandia. Your time at the farm will begin with a tour of the operation. Participants will have the opportunity to observe and perhaps help with planting, depending on how far along in the planting process the farm is at that time. The group will then gather for a talk about honeybees, natural pest control, time-saving gardening tips and much more. Questions and active participation will be encouraged.

Tour the Presque Isle power plant that is the fourth largest power plant in the We Energies system and has a total net generating capacity of 617 megawatts. The plant has nine generating units, burning two different types of coal and #2 fuel oil for diesel generators and for boiler start-up. Electrostatic precipitators remove most of the fly ash with baghouse fabric filters removing the remainder. 243,000 gallons of water from Lake Superior are used every minute to convert the exhaust steam from the turbines back into water for reuse. This water is returned to the Lake.
Tour participants should be prepared to wear hardhats, safety glasses and earplugs provided by WE Energies. Women should wear slacks and low-heeled shoes. No children under 5th grade and no picture taking allowed.

With Bob's skillful guidance, we will explore the workings of some of the plumbing systems in our homes. We'll learn how to identify and make simple repairs: dripping faucets, leaking toilets, etc. how to use different tools, work with various kinds of pipe and tubing, identify and work with fittings, learn the how and why of plumbing traps and venting, and even "when to call the professional."
