Dean, College of Professional Studies Phone: 906-227-2400 Office: 174 Whitman Hall E-mail: plang@nmu.edu |
Dr. Lang is currently serving as Dean for the College of Professional Studies at Northern Michigan University. These duties were assumed in March 2008.
Paul began his tenure at NMU in 1997 as Department Head and Professor of Criminal Justice. He has taught extensively and broadly in the field of Criminal Justice at both the graduate and undergraduate level. As a generalist in the field, his classes included curriculum that addressed both the law enforcement and corrections areas. At the graduate level, he taught classes regularly in organizational theory and police management.
In 2002, in addition to continuing with his responsibilities in Criminal Justice, he was appointed Associate Dean of the College of Professional Studies. In that capacity, Paul supported the college by providing oversight and supervision to several ongoing projects. Over the past several years, Paul has also provided significant administrative support to the Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Department and more recently (2006/2007) served as the interim head and director of the School of Technology and Applied Sciences.
Most of Paul’s recent scholarly work is in the area of “application.” He has recently served on the Iron County Drug Court, Crystal Falls, Michigan, where he assisted with the development and implementation of the Court, attended Department of Justice Training Sessions, and served as program evaluator for the Courts Program.
Paul also has served as Management Consultant for the Athens Police Department, Athens, Ohio. Most recently he has served as a curriculum consultant to St. Norbert’s College in DePere, Wisconsin.
Paul has been professionally active during his time at Northern. He has traveled extensively in South Africa and has been instrumental in the development of partnerships/relationships with various groups and universities in that country. More recently, he has been part of a group of faculty and administrators who are exploring opportunities for expanding international initiatives in Mexico. He has also been instrumental in the development and implementation of the “on line” Loss Prevention Program that was approved by the university and the Board in 2007.
Currently Paul represents the university in several community partnership programs. He is on the Line Tech Program Advisory Board. In that capacity, he works closely with the Lake Superior Community Foundation and others who represent the “electrical power” industry in our region. He also serves as the university’s representative with Michigan Works job development program and is currently a member of the Upper Peninsula’s steering committee for the Michigan Prisoner Release Initiative.
Dr. Lang looks forward to the many opportunities and challenges that will be a part of his new responsibilities. He is heartened by the expertise, commitment, and dedication of the department heads, faculty and staff in his college. He is especially excited about the many local and regional initiatives with which the College of Professional Studies will be involved during the next academic year.
