NMU Partners to Research Alcohol and Domestic Violence

Northern Michigan University faculty members from the Department of Sociology and Social Work have joined forces with the Marquette Domestic Violence Shelter and Marquette General Hospital in an effort to measure what role alcohol plays in relation to violence against women.  Research project details.

Greg Warchol

Criminal Justice professor Greg Warchol is one of two recipients of the 2008 Distinguished Faculty Award. He is a recognized authority on criminal activity in Africa related to natural resources theft, poaching and the illegal wildlife trade. Full story.

Andrea Dupras, a junior mechanical engineering technology major from Marquette, won a campus-wide contest for the best suggestions for a more sustainable campus. Northern is exploring the use of biodegradable trash bags as a result of Dupras’ suggestion.  Full story.

The Great Wall of China

Faculty members of the Sociology and Social Work Department are currently leading a study abroad course in China. Students are experiencing Chinese culture through art and meditation in addition to studying with masters of calligraphy and landscape painting as well as Tai Chi. Full details

Lang Named Dean

NMC Involved in Heroes at Home
Heroes at Home Sign in front of HouseA student organization known at the Northern Michigan Constructors (NMC) recently took part in a nationwide project designed to provide aide to military families facing hardships.  Student volunteers from the Construction Management and Building Technology Program spent the day working along side professionals in the field on both interior and exterior repairs in the home of a military family residing in the Upper Peninsula.  Heroes at Home details

Online Learning

Northern’s new online bachelor’s degree in loss prevention management debuted with the start of fall 2007 classes. It is among the only LP degrees in the nation.  Additionally, the Criminal Justice Department has announced a new graduate certificate in criminal justice management that is completely online.
