Mission Statement
The mission of the College of Business is to deliver high quality academic and related programs that prepare students for successful careers and responsible engagement in a pluralistic, global society.
Vision
By 2010, the College of Business at Northern Michigan University will be the college of choice for business education in the region.
Strategic Intents
The programs, services, and activities of the College of Business at Northern Michigan University will be guided by the following strategic intents:
Faculty: The College of Business faculty shall demonstrate balanced excellence in teaching, research, and service. Toward this end, the College will:
- attract and retain a core of qualified faculty in all functional disciplines offered by the College;
- have a faculty who pursue high standards of quality in the teaching/learning process;
- Support and expect faculty to pursue pedagogical research, contribution to practice, and discipline based scholarship and to communicate their knowledge to students;
- emphasize student advising as an important element of faculty responsibility; and
- have a faculty who develop and maintain connections to professional organizations and to the community the college serves.
Curriculum: The College of Business will offer a challenging, responsive and integrated curriculum that recognizes current learning environment. Toward this end, the College will:
- develop a rigorous core curriculum and identify alternative ways of teaching it (such as team teaching and on-line delivery);
- redesign and simplify the curriculum to enable students to graduate in four years;
- regularly review and offer programs that meet societal needs;
- incorporate leadership, ethics, global awareness, problem solving, decision making, and communication abilities in the curriculum; and
- provide students with internship, service learning, and other experiential forms of learning.
Students: Students in the College of Business will have a sense of community, ownership in their learning, and commitment to reach their potential. Toward this end, the College will:
- serve both traditional and nontraditional students;
- strive to graduate students in four years;
- incorporate a study abroad experience in a student’s program of study;
- direct students to actively participate in the Superior Edge program;
- engage students to serve in student organizations;
- provide placement opportunities in national organizations; and
- provide quality student advising in both course scheduling and career counseling.
Infrastructure: The College of Business will create and provide a learning environment that will permit it to deliver quality education and support faculty research. Toward this end, the College will:
- have properly equipped and maintained classrooms with seating layouts appropriate for different types of teaching methods;
- have seminar rooms and meeting spaces for faculty and students;
- seek faculty and student input in the selection of classroom equipment;
- provide the most current hardware, software, and technical support system and library resources for both faculty development and classroom instruction; and
- employ a sufficient number of qualified support staff to carry out its functions.
External Relations: The College of Business will develop and foster relationships with alumni, businesses, and non-profit organizations in the region and engage alumni and other stakeholders in enhancing the curriculum. Toward this end, the College of Business will:
- regularly assess the needs of area businesses and non-profit organizations and design and deliver appropriate training and skill building programs;
- increase and deepen regional, national, and international partnerships for teaching, research, and student placement;
- increase the amount and variety of external support for the College, its activities and its programs;
- engage the alumni to provide learning opportunities for students;
- work collaboratively with NMU Foundation to obtain support for College of Business projects; and
- provide the marketplace with business graduates who will add value to organizations and society.
Road Map to 2015 Priorities
The College of Business has identified the following six Road Map to 2015 items as its top priorities-
1A Goal: An academic curriculum that balances successful programs with new offerings at the undergraduate and graduate level to meet the needs of students, as well as improve student career opportunities after graduation.
1B Goal: A new professional development program for faculty and staff that rewards innovative practices and encourages interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration.
1C Goal: A growing portfolio of corporate collaborations that exploit NMU's technical expertise, enhance academic programs and facilitate global engagement for students and faculty both on campus and abroad.
MLC Goal: Integrate the highest possible level of information technology skills and competencies throughout the University.
LCAC Goal: Enhance the portfolio of academic program, research and other activities that leverage the University's location in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
CED Goal: Increase collaboration with local communities, schools, governments, development groups and other partners to enhance community and economic development in the Upper Peninsula.

Campus Location
The College of Business is located at 301 Cohodas Hall, which is accessible from both the Presque Isle Avenue and Harden Drive entrances, and is located across from the Bottum University Center. (See campus map.) The main office is located in 301 Cohodas and the dean’s office is located in 304 Cohodas.
