Author and NMU alumna Kathleen M. Heideman presented a multimedia discussion on her work as a writer entitled "Tracking Curiosity: from Lake Superior to Antarctica," which drew upon diverse themes of wilderness, environmental remediation, scientific inquiry, visual arts and emerging technologies on March 13. She also addressed the Psychology Colloquium series on the subject "Mind-on-I.C.E. Isolated Confined Environments" on March 14. Those who work in places like Antarctica need to pass a psychological screening pre-test. Scientists, station employees, research staff, and others working on the White Continent face unique psychological challenges and opportunities that have been the subject of studies by sociologists and psychologists. Heideman explained how "working in ICE" can impact sensory perception, the experience of time, cultural divisions, even feelings of human interconnectedness.
