Winter 2003 Game Dates
Feb 18, 2003 - Apr 25, 2003
Feb 24, 2003 - May 02, 2003
The Michigan Stock Market Game is a ten-week simulation of Wall Street Trading that provides a framework for teaching about the stock market, business, and economic decision-making. The Stock Market Game is designed to help students understand the stock market, the economic way of thinking, and how the economic way of thinking helps students make knowledgeable decisions in all aspects of their lives. Teams of 3 to 5 students compete in elementary, middle, and high school divisions. Each team is given a hypothetical $100,000 to invest in common stock on the New York, American, and NASDAQ stock exchanges. Students are responsible for researching stocks, making decisions as a team, and executing the team trades. In association with the Securities Industry Association and its Foundation for Economic Education, MCEE is the exclusive SMG provider in Michigan. The Michigan Council on Economic Education offers workshops and materials to support SMG in the classroom. Plus, additional materials are available on the SMG website to registered SMG Teacher Advisors.
The Stock Market Game was designed to use in classrooms from grades 4 to 12. The simulation helps students develop an understanding of how the stock market works and its role in today’s economy. Additionally, it can be used to help students meet the Michigan standards. While participating in the SMG, students learn the basic economic and business principles. Students will also understand the importance of current and political events and their effect on the economy.
Established in 1979, The Michigan Council on Economic Education (MCEE) is a non-profit, statewide corporation whose mission is to educate teachers and students about the economy and instill in them an appreciation for the market economy. The council seeks to accomplish this mission by providing a variety of services and programs to teachers for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.
The Michigan Council on Economic Education fights economic illiteracy by helping educators prepare students to become responsible citizens, productive members of the workforce, knowledgeable consumers, prudent savers and investors, effective participants in the global economy and lifelong decision makers by promoting standards, producing standards-based educational materials, training teachers and assessing results.
