Online Tutoring
Please understand that online tutoring is intended for those students whose schedules or distance from the school prevents them from being able to access the Writing Center during our open hours. Online tutoring, no matter how good, can never be as complete and thorough as a face-to-face tutoring session, and is in no way intended to replace walk-in appointments at the Writing Center. If it is at all possible, please visit the Writing Center in person.
To submit a paper via e-mail, follow this procedure:
- Complete the online tutoring cover sheet. Because an online tutoring session does not allow for an easy dialogue between tutors and students, the cover sheet must be completed to give the tutor an idea of your progress and concerns about the paper. To complete the cover sheet, click on the link above. A box should appear, asking you if you would like to open or save this document. You have two options: You may save the document to your computer, complete it, and send it to the Writing Center as an attachment separate from your paper, or you may open the document and copy and paste its contents to the beginning of your paper, and then send that single document to the Writing Center. Either procedure is acceptable.
- E-mail your paper and completed cover sheet (see number 1) to writing@nmu.edu. Papers submitted without cover sheets will not be read.
- A tutor will e-mail you back within 24 hours to confirm we have your paper.
- The tutor will return your paper to you with comments within 72 hours. During those 72 hours, the tutor may need to correspond with you about the paper. Please check your e-mail regularly during that time.
- Please note that online tutoring is not available during semester breaks, holidays, and finals.
If you have questions or concerns regarding this process, please contact us.
