Upper Peninsula native and NMU alumnus, John D. Voelker, writing under the pen name of Robert Traver, published his book Anatomy of a Murder in January 1958. The novel, based on a case he tried as a lawyer involving an Army lieutenant accused of murder, set in the U.P., was turned into a hit movie directed by Otto Preminger. The film starred Jimmy Stewart, Lee Remick, George C. Scott and Eve Arden.
