Logging from Off Campus for IBM Users

This contains instructions on how to log hours on http://supredge.nmu.edu/ off campus.

Before you can log hours off campus, you need to have the Nortel VPN Client installed on your computer.  To see if you have this software, go to the [Start Menu], [All Programs], and look for a folder that says [Nortel Networks].  If you have this folder, please go to step 3; otherwise please follow steps 1 and 2 to download and install the Nortel VPN.

TO INSTALL THE VPN:

Step 1) Access the internet and open your web browser.  Type "download.nmu.edu" in the address bar and press GO or Enter.  When the page finishes loading, press on the [Windows ICON].

Locate the list of links on the far right side of the page (Starting with MAIN, ALL, Antivirus. etc).  Click on the [Utilities] link.

Scroll down the page until you find the [Nortel Contivity VPN Client].  Make sure you get the right link, because there are files with similar names.  Click on the [+] next to [Nortel Contivity VPN Client] and then click on [Download Now ICON].  Choose to download the file and save it to disk (remember where you are saving it).

Step 2) After the file is finished downloading, locate the file, which should start with [NortelNetworksContivity...etc], and double click it to start the install.  A menu will appear, click on [YES].  The software installer will load, when the next choice comes up: please choose [YES].  After it finishes installing, Allow the computer to restart by making sure that the Radial button for [Yes, I want to restart my computer now] is selected and then press [Finish].

TO RUN THE VPN:

Step 3) Open [Start Menu], [All Programs] [Nortel Networks] and then click on [Contivity VPN Client].  This will start the software.  Please enter your username and password (the same you use for my.nmu.edu or email) and press [Connect].  If it asks you to save, select [Yes].  The software will now attempt to connect, if it does so: log onto http://supredge.nmu.edu/ to start logging hours.

If it does not connect, check to make sure you are connected to the internet.  If further problems persist, please contact the NMU Helpdesk at 906-227-2468.

See VPN for more information about Virtual Private Networking.

The VPN Client enables Mac OS X to act as though it were physically on another network.  In order for users to access certain features of the NMU network, such as downloading files from download.nmu.edu, they need to be connected to the internet and NMU using the VPN Client if they are not on the NMU network.  A VPN connection is required to use the NMUCLC wireless network.

[edit]

Using the VPN Client

  1. Go to Macintosh HD, Applications, VPNClient.  You should see the following screen:

    • There should be one connection entry:  NMU VPN
    • The host should be:  macvpn.nmu.edu
    • The transport should be:  IPSec/UDP

  2. When you click on the NMU VPN entry and click the Modify button, you should see the following screen:

    • The Authentication tab should show that it is set to Group Authentication.
    • The name should be:  nmuvpn
    • The password should also be:  nmuvpn

  3. The Transport tab should look like this:

The Enable Transparent Tunneling should be checked and the IPSec over UDP (NAT / PAT) should be selected.  Nothing else should be selected.

  4. The Backup Servers tab should have the Enable Backup Servers box unchecked, like this:

  5. Now that the settings are correct, click Save and you will be returned to the main screen.

  6. Click Connect to connect to the VPN.  Now, a box will pop up asking for a username and password:

  7. This username and password are the same as the ones used for the user's NMU e-mail account.  After connecting, the window should go down into the dock.  You should now be connected to the NMU VPN.

  8. You are ready to start logging; please go to http://supredge.nmu.edu/.
