What is a special lifesaver? A volunteer who commits to giving units of red cells, plasma, or platelets via automation, only requiring 1 to 1 1/2 hours every two weeks.
Why should you become a special lifesaver? Many heart, cancer and critically ill patients need multiple units of platelets, red cells and plasma. Theses blood products are essential for life. Our center helps fulfill this need by using the TRIMA automated collections machine to collect these products. A donor can help to give these critically ill patients another chance at live. Platelet demand is on the rise and there is a continuous need for new special lifesavers. Unlike “whole blood” donation in which a unit of whole blood is removed from your body, the special lifesaver process connects you to the TRIMA automated collections machine can collect up to three different products from your blood. The collection process is absolutely sterile so the risk to you, the donor, is no greater than when you donate a unit of whole blood.
Who can be a special lifesaver? Special lifesaver donors must meet the following requirements:
• Must be at least 17 years old
• Weigh at least 110 lbs.
• Feeling well and healthy on the day of donation
• Eat at least 2 hours before donation
• Present a picture ID
• Be aspirin free for 36 hours
• Have not taken plavix or ticlid in the past 14 days
• Have not taken non-steroidal anti-inflammatory in the past 24 hours
What to expect? You will need to call and schedule an appointment. On the day of your donation you will fill out a questionnaire and be given a mini-physical including a blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and hemoglobin check. The donation is the next step. You will be able to watch television, study, or just relax and save lives! You will receive a free movie pass and the satisfaction of knowing you helped save a life! For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 906-225-4610.
