“My suggestion for students working toward the Superior Edge is to be open to all opportunities that will provide growth. Go out there and challenge yourself and others. Be a positive role model for others and always support your peers. One hundred hours is nothing when you are doing something you love, making others happy, leading others towards a goal, or learning about those vast differences in people’s lives that make the world so unique.”

“I expected that this would be a difficult edge for me to complete. I do a lot of volunteer work, but I never thought I could get to 100 hours, and the idea of doing civic engagement was daunting! However, once I started, I found it very easy to seek out different activities and working towards this edge made me enjoy volunteering even more than I already did. Once I finally did my civic engagement, I realized why this was a vital part of this edge, and I really did enjoy learning about community processes.”

“I have traveled pretty well in my stay at NMU and have been able to better understand the Latino culture in particular. Being around the culture and being integrated into the culture was the best way to learn. These experiences helped me grow into the more globally-aware woman that I am today. Just seeing things from a different point of view than the US perspective aided in opening my eyes to the problems that are around us.”

“Through this experience, I learned that in order to become an effective leader, you need to be willing to put yourself out in the open and forget about being self-conscious. This is something that I used to have a problem doing, but after being exposed to many activities that involved speaking or demonstrating in front of a large group of people, it became second nature to me.”

“I have learned about how business is done on a small scale in real life. I have learned firsthand that it’s not always cut and dry like it is in the textbook that I have for class.”

“Don't be intimidated by the idea of 400 hours. Start with an hour and work from there. Most of the experiences I logged were ones that I was already participating in.”
