Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary

During their second year in the program, Student Fellows are required to develop and implement a 100 hour community service internship. Erin Ulrey, Kiwi Block, decided to help out at the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary in Orr, Minnesota.

"I chose to get involved with this project because I was looking for something different where I could work with animals. I believed their purpose of using a unique situation to educate the public about bear safety and education was an important cause that I would like to help out," Erin said.

"The Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary is the only wild bear sanctuary in the world," said Erin. The founder, Vince Shute, began by feeding bears to keep them from breaking into cabins for food. After he was too old to feed them, Vince decided to create a sanctuary in order to prevent bears from being killed.

Erin mentioned that all volunteers are to remain ten feet away from the bears but Jenny, right, happened to enter the photo as Erin was putting the food down.
