The Seaborg Center will sponsor the twenty-second Upper Peninsula Region I Michigan Science Olympiad Tournament. Events will take place on February 14, 2009 on the campus of Northern Michigan University, where middle school and high school teams from across the U.P. will test their skills in science and technology. Seaborg Center Affiliations

Math-Science Center logoThe Seaborg Center is a member of the Michigan Mathematics and Science Centers Network providing leadership, curriculum support, professional development and student services to educators in local school districts. The center also serves as a resource clearinghouse for educational materials and information, and works to foster community involvement in the areas of mathematics and science. The Mathematics and Science Centers Network supports the delivery of high quality mathematics and science education for the students of Michigan.


HS MASS Workshops "High School Mathematics and Science Success"

HS-MASS is a statewide grant, run through the Mathematic/Science Centers, aimed at improving student performance on the Michigan Merit Exam (MME).  Last year, teachers immersed themselves in an ACT experience and explored research-based instructional strategies to help students improve their skills at data interpretation.  This year, HS-MASS sessions will focus on the (1) new HSCE companion documents and on (2) developing and using formative assessments.


Free! Virtual Manipulatives for Mathematics (K-12)
Circle graphAre you looking for interactive ways to illustrate a concept? Do you have students who need practice? The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives has virtual manipulatives for all levels of mathematics. These activities are organized by grade level and indexed by numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis and probability.

Examples of Seaborg Center Partnerships

Marquette-Alger RESA
The Seaborg Center works with Marquette-Alger RESA to provide high-quality professional development for mathematics and science. For example, teachers from every district attend jointly sponsored Mathematics and Science Learning teams to exchange information and share activities.

Michigan Mathematics Leadership Academy (MMLA)
The Michigan Mathematics Leadership Academy trains K-12 teachers on current topics of interest in mathematics. The Seaborg Center hosts the Upper Peninsula regional meetings of MMLA, with the first training taking place Nov. 1. High school training session focuses on a functions approach to Algebra. Elementary and middle school sessions feature geometric thinking combined with activities on data and probability. For information on MMLA, contact the Seaborg Center.

2007 Lake Superior Youth Symposium, May 10-13, Big Bay, Michigan
The Seaborg Center coordinated the 2007 Lake Superior Youth Symposium with collaboration and support from 18 partners including governmental agencies, schools, non-profit organizations and environmental groups. (List of supporting agencies)

AGES - Area Geriatric Education Scholars Internship Program for UP Youth
During the summer of 2007, the AGES program hosted 37 student-interns at 11 long-term care facilities throughout the Upper Peninsula. The project was sponsored by Upper Peninsula Health Education Corporation with help from Northern Michigan University’s Seaborg Center, Michigan State University Extension (UP Region), MichiganWorks!, UP community foundations, UP hospital foundations, Great Lakes Center for Youth Development, corporate supporters and association support. A similar program is planned for summer 2008.
