The Peer Advising, Counseling and Education (PACE) program is a service of the Multicultural Education and Resource Center at NMU.

This program assists freshmen and sophomores with academic and personal development by teaming up with peer mentors.

Services

PACE students are divided into teams.  Each team is comprised of 10-12 students, with one additional student serving as team facilitator.  Team facilitators are junior or senior students who provide leadership and mentorship for freshman and sophomore students.  Through communication with the team facilitator, PACE students are given academic support, access to resources and are updated on future campus activities.  Students also have opportunities for social interaction with their peers by attending group activities.  PACE students are invited to attend activities that are designed to enrich their academic experience at NMU as well as prepare them for post-graduation life.  These events emphasize:
  • time management

  • class preparation

  • stress management

  • effective resume writing

  • business etiquette

  • discovering a leadership style

  • community service

Goals

The goals of the program are:

  • To improve the academic success of freshman and sophomore students

  • To build and enhance leadership skills in participants

  • To assist participants in learning how to learn

  • To assist with the social integration of participants

Opportunities

Some PACE activities include:

  • Academic support, such as advising, study skills and access to printing equipment

  • Orientation activities, discussion groups and camaraderie

  • Hiking, skating, sledding or pot lucks
